Driving along Route 9, at km 298, you will find a sign that invites you to turn right, towards Punta del Diablo, a road in a very good condition of about with 3 or 4 km length. It is hard to describe in words the first impression of this beach town, dominated by the windy and salty soul of Atlantic Ocean. From the first moment you walk on the beach Los Barcos, which is directly at the end of the main street, you become part of the imprint of this resort so special that melt, as strangely as perfect, in the summer, these fishermen and native peoples with modern discos, wave surfers and national and international tourists. The environment of fishermen, boats coming and holidaymakers bathing on the beach also gives an unique peculiarity that worth living.

Initially, Punta del Diablo was a fishing village (first of them coming from neighboring Valizas). These first fishermen built the houses that are on the beach "La Viuda" (the Widow), to the right from the rock formation that overlooks the main street, and they are nowadays still working on the site. Their boats and nets are still on the beach of "Los Barcos" (the Ships) in the heart of the resort. Even when Punta del Diablo was a "little fishing village" for many years, since several years ago it has become very popular, with the help of surfers who were looking for ocean waves to deploy their expertise, then by Uruguayan tourists looking for resting far from the noise and approaching to the nature of the sea, and finally with the first bold pioneers elsewhere, these beaches are more like an international beach resort than virgin beach. The fact is that today the resort has lost much of its loneliness, about which, Washington Benavides speaks in his song, at least in summer. However, the town has not lost that feeling, that comes to those who arrive there, of having been transported to other times and to be part of this culture that sees the sea as a source of life and daily meal.

It worth, when a fisherman came back to the beach from the sea, you take a while to watch the whole operation of returning home: at first, they download the colorful shipload of fish and shrimp, sorted into boxes (and just on the san you can ask the angler for the price per kg of fresh fish or shrimp which they sell) and then they tow the boat to moor it on the beach until next day. Along the beach Los Botes you can see steel slings rolled around brackets that used to tow the boats. You will like because it is very artisanal: they place wooden or metal cylinders for the ship to roll over boards.Meanwhile you are watching such a show, tan yourself on the sand or refresh yourself in the sea (the water is calm enough for children).
Artisans at Punta del Diablo deserve a separate chapter. Years ago they placed haphazardly along the main street and surrounding area, but nowadays in Punta del Diablo there is a small market for artisans (where it cannot only buy crafts but also to rest in a cool bar with a drink), there also several local with handicrafts made with seafood and valuable art objects, and even any bohemian artist who continues offering their creations in the few remaining stalls.
If you get lazy to buy the fresh fish to prepare, do not worry, there are several nice restaurants on the main street or on the coast where the main ingredients are seafood and fish. There is something for every budget. Just a tip: watch the prices before ordering if you go with limited money. If the cost of the restaurants still seems too high for you, there are several food stores that with lower prices, offer a plenty of options.
If you want to surf, we recommend 2 options: Playa de la Viuda. For most skilled surfers that is the most popular because it has strongest waves, rather tubular (also very popular among young people in general) and the Beach del Rivero, towards Santa Teresa, also known as Playa Grande and is suitable for all surfers. In both cases, you can surf there all year round.
Something that you should not miss: the night life in Punta del Diablo. There are dozens of options, live music at night clubs that bring together many young (and not so young) of Uruguay and the rest of the world.
The hotel infrastructure is almost nonexistent in Punta del Diablo (which remains almost untouched its natural environment). Most vacationers rent a particular cabin in the village, however if in January we recommend you go with something rented in advance since there are summers that nothing remains there. Anyway, to stay in Punta del Diablo, there are many possible options for those who travel with a low budget or for bulkier wallets: camping, hostels, houses for rent, hostels, accommodation and services 5 stars. Here at the Tourist Club, you will find many of these options, so we have for you from our list of hotels and cabins in Punta del Diablo to go there without shock.
