San Gregorio de Polanco

At the heart of Uruguay is placed the town of San Gregorio de Polanco. It was founded in 1853 and has a population of about 3,000. It is about 360 km from Montevideo and 140 km from the city of Tacuarembó, capital of the region with the same name.

It is a quiet village which is mainly engaged in fishing, as it is located on the banks of an artificial lake created during the processing of the dam, "Dr. Gabriel Terra", in the Rio Negro river. Hundreds of tourists arrive to that place from all over the country to enjoy the tranquility offered by this town. Especially in summer, the place comes alive with visitors who come to relax, swim and enjoy the natural scenery and fishing or boating on the beautiful waters of the lake.

To maximize your stay, it is advisable to do a walk through the village. Thus, you can visit the Open Museum of Visual Arts of San Gregorio. This museum has about 65 works, including sculptures and paintings about facades of public and private buildings. Many of these works show locals or daily stories, while others focus on celebrities such as Carlos Gardel, whose history is more linked to the Department of Tacuarembó, because this one would have been his birth place.

The nightlife is very quiet, being restaurants the largest meeting point for those hours. Of course, a good dinner with a delicious roast and a good red wine.

Getting There

If you have your own vehicle, from Montevideo it should be taken by routes 5 and 43. If you do not have one, from the Bus Terminal Tres Cruces you should take a bus to San Gregorio de Polanco. The trip will last approximately 5 hours and the passage has an estimated price of USD 20.

Accommodation

If you're looking for complete relaxation, then the best choice of accommodation is in hotels and guesthouses of various levels found in the area. If the idea is to rest but be able of cooking a freshly caught mackerel, then cottages and bungalows are ideal for this purpose. And if otherwise, you prefer to sleep under the starry sky, the municipal campground offers this and many other amenities.

Tips

Two interesting places to visit: "La Casona", a building whose history is made by each family in the village and the "Pulpería" of Paso de Polanco, a colonial building of about two hundred years old. This is in ruins as it is very expensive its restoration.
