Located 80 km from the city of Salto, Salto Department's capital, the Arapey is Uruguay's oldest spa. Water is obtained from a drilling depth of 1200 m, directly from the Guarani Aquifer.

In the complex you can find outdoor pools and also an indoor pool, which is set with plants to recreate a natural environment. All pools have information posters about the water temperature, they range between 37 and 42 °C.

Thermal water has healing properties, that is why hundreds of tourists come to the facility every year. But there are also those who choose to relax and relieve stress here. For them, in the surroundings there are sports facilities and resorts that feature all the amenities. You can also find several shops to buy souvenirs, supplies and entertainment, and restaurants where you can taste uruguayan the typical dishes. These include the asado (roast), pasta and traditional desserts like rice pudding.

In the complex you can enjoy the green scenery and very good ideas are to spend the day having a picnic in the place as well as to have the traditional nap below the shade of the trees.

Getting There

From the capital, Montevideo, for those who own their own vehicle, can be accessed via Routes 3 and 24. For those who do not have a car, they shall take a bus (or micro) from Terminal Tres Cruces to Salto. Once in the terminal of Salto, you have to take another bus to the area of thermes. Prices for the bus to jump around USD 30, and to the thermal springs USD 6.

Accommodation

In the vicinity of the thermal resort there are hotels of different categories to suit all budgets. In addition, it counts with municipal bungalows for those who prefer a more familiar stay. And for those who love nature, there are also campsites with full amenities ..

Tips

  • Price of admission to the thermal complex is about USD 3 for adults and about USD 1,5 for children.
  • Hot springs have an effect on our blood pressure, so it is recommended that those who wish to use the pools with higher temperatures made carefully and without making sudden movements.
  • The complex is open all year long, but it is most enjoyable when the weather is warm (but not hot), since it is difficult to get into hot water when it's hot, and uncomfortable to leave from them when when it is cold. Although, of course, that's why there is a roofed pool, which helps to mitigate these feelings.
