In the Salto Grande area there are essentially three tourist destinations. The first place to go are the Termas de Salto Grande, then the Hotel Horacio Quiroga that houses within it a water park, and finally, you can visit the Salto Grande Dam.

Thermal springs

The thermal springs of Salto Grande are located about 10 km from the city of Salto, in a natural park covering about 220 hectares. There are several activities that can be performed on it, like biking, riding horses or sulkys, or sports, as it has courts to practice paddle, tennis and soccer. It is also recommended go hiking to discover every little explored corner of the park.

The Water Park

El Salto Grande Water Park, although within the Hotel Horacio Quiroga complex, is free, but for those not staying at the resort charges an entrance ticket. Up to 4 years children are admitted free, and under 11 years they pay a reduced price. Hotel guests have free access.

The park features giant whirlpool and waterfall, under which you can enjoy the gentle massage that the water makes. This is the relax option, along with the "River Adventure", an attraction of about 180 meters long that consists on a ride on rubber boats that can be done countless times since it is a circular route with sinuosities.

For the younger kids, can be found games like water slides, sun beds and showers, in addition to traditional pools that appeal to visitors of all ages. Although it is interesting to highlight the "Playa Paraíso", a pool with artificial waves.

And if you prefere attractions with more adrenaline boost, then "Anaconda" and "Black Hole" are excellent choices. These are steep slides with spiral path that will get the blood flowing at high speed. Nice for the most fearless people.

The dam

Salto Grande Dam is a binational work between Uruguay and Argentina for power generation, with caring for the environment. The work started in 1974 and in 1979 began to work the first of 14 turbines that currently exist. In 1983 the construction of the dam was completed and became operational the last hydroelectric generator.

Is possible a visit inside the dam that consists of an informational film and a tour through a replica of the dam to know the details and a range of balconies that allow us to see the monumental work.

Getting There

The best option is to get there driving your own car. From Montevideo you should take Route 1 and then Route 3. At Km 505 is possible to see the signals to the Horacio Quiroga Hotel. At the same route you will be directed towards the dam. By bus, it should be taken a bus bound for Salto at Terminal Tres Cruces, priced around USD 30. The Horacio Quiroga resort provides free transportation from Salto to their facilities, between them the water park.

Accommodation

A good choice is the Horacio Quiroga Hotel, with all the comforts of an international hotel. It also has the advantage of being inside the thermal park of Salto Grande, so the distances are shorter and inside the complex itself, without leave it. In addition, if you have your own vehicle, you can stay at nearby hotels or in the city of Salto, since the distance is short.

Tips

  • If you are staying at Salto without your own vehicle, you should find out ahead, the schedule transportation to the water park.
  • The hot springs at the hotel are served up even with food, so, if you have problems with its intake, you should warn it in the hotel's restaurant.
