Maldonado capital city is one of the oldest populations in the interior. Since the mid-eighteenth century had a great development due to its privileged geographical position at the entrance to the Río de la Plata, then becoming the second largest city in the Banda Oriental.
With strong roots in the history of Uruguay, Maldonado is also a flagship department with a strong identity in tourism services. This city, as well as most of the locations of their environment within the department, lives mostly on tourism, not only because of the heavy investment made by successive governments departments and private operators in this sector, but also by the generous support that Nature has endowed the coasts and forests of this department, without a doubt one of the most beautiful in the country.
Regardless of the Maldonado'resort the map of your backpack takes you, your steps will take you more than once to this beautiful city, with a subtle historical imprint without obscuring its indivisible embrace with Punta del Este and other resorts on the coast . But since we start with tips for your history tour.
Most places of historic significance in Maldonado was concentrated near the Plaza de San Fernando, with its fountain illuminated at night and the statue of Jose Artigas concentrating dozens of children who use their basement as a granite chute. Facing the square stands the San Fernando Cathedral, declared a national historical monument. On the main altar is the image of the Virgen del Carmen, part of the ship "City of Santander", which sank near Isla de Lobos in 1829. To the left of the altar is an icon of Christ that was found dying on the shores of the ocean well packaged, its origin unknown.
One block from the Plaza (July 18 and May 25) is the headquarters of Dragons, originally to house Corps Blandengues of Jose Artigas and where he obtaines his military rank. In its 2500 square meters, you can visit different rooms with objects belonging to the military history and various works of art. Across the vast courtyard, and on the premises occupy the halls and courtyard of a school within the former site of the barracks, is Nicolas Garcia Uriburu Collection, collection of works by sculptors and painters of the stature of Uruguayan José Belloni, Edmundo Prati, Joseph Cuneo and Rafael Barradas, among others. Although the museum has no name as such works in a meticulous and orderly displays of works of art integrated into perfect harmony with the building facilities.
Following the historical one block is the House of Culture which currently operates as a municipal library, Theater and Arts School.
An important separate paragraph deserves, in our view, the roof of Haedo Roof Haedo (Br Artigas and Mercedes), built as a summer house by Eduardo Victor Haedo, who was president of the National Government in 1961. Haedo was a great promoter of initiatives related to art and wanted this home finds a field for artists and writers of his time making it a center for cultural expansion in the region. The property consists of a wonderful park containing sculptures by Luis Zorrilla de San Martín, and Angel Edmundo Prati Zanelli, an amphitheater, a chapel with a subtle form quincho in a cart and a virgin at the altar of carved wood Ibirapitá (tree Artigas ). In the construction of the property known as the roof is what was the workshop of art and Haedo on the upper floor the "conversatorio". In the rooms of a house is plunged into a journey through the history of our country throughout the twentieth century with an endless collection of photos of Uruguayan politicians, leaders of the era, and artists from all over the world. This house went from Che Guevara to Menem and from Alfonsina Storni until Mario Moreno (Cantinflas), along with Benito Nardone, Juana Domingo Perón Ibarbourou or forming a cambalache own history of a time machine. In summer arts events are held in that house. Unfortunately, this "museum" has not a good promotion of tourism, however (and especially for domestic tourism) is a very attractive place, without a doubt, we recommend here at the Tourist Club.
Other interesting places are the Torre del Vigia (Pérez del Puerto and Zelmar Michellini). The tower 13 meters high and 5 to one side was built in a high ground to monitor the entry and exit of vessels from River Plate. The building dates from the year 1800 environment. The Museum of Puppetry (Rafael Pérez del Puerto and War between Sarandí) with puppets from around the world, the Museum of American Art (Thirty Three 823) and the Pedestrian Sarandí
