Montevideo - Parks and green spaces (Guíde 1)
During several years, mayoralty of Montevideo has spent a lot of effort on parks and squares care and improvement. Of course to visit them all you would need several days, so we will recommend those we believe are best places. Coming from the Carrasco International Airport along Italia Ave, beyond "Portones Shopping", LATU (National Technologic Lab), and Hypermarkets, stands Rivera Park, beautiful park with a large artificial lake and benches to sit away from the noise. On the other side of the lake, barbecues for roasts and sometimes a small crafts fair. If we keep walking around the lake we find a site with animals carved in trunks where kids can play and climb. The lake is also a good place for bird watching, especially because of the island interior with dense vegetation that provides a perfect habitat for many species. A good place for jogging and biking. This is a beautiful park with more eucalyptus trees than people, recommended for the whole family.
Other beautiful park in Montevideo, which strangely is not usually recommended in most of printed guides is the small Japanese Garden in the Blanes Museum back yard (Av. Millan 4015). 2000 m2 masterfully designed by the Japanese landscaper Haruho Ieda and carefully maintained with the minuteness of an ancient samurai. There is a waterfall, an island, bridges, tea houses, stone paths, benches in the shade and a wide variety of plant species. Maybe you will find yourself wanting more of this due to its small area, but surely those who like plants and gardens will enjoy every step of this way along this sample of oriental good taste.
One of the biggest sites dedicated to Montevideo green spaces is the Prado Park. There you can visit the Botanic Garden (Av. 19 de Abril and Lucas Obes street) with several acres covered by plant species from around the world, well and carefully ordered with different environments to walk, an herbarium with its botanical museum and a library inside the campus. Outdoors Botanical Garden, a few steps away stands always the Rose Garden with its attractive trellis paths and gardens covered by a plenty of roses. There are also many green areas for walking with different scenarios, bridges, stream Miguelete (a bit dirty but which sooner or later will be recovered), iron games for children, etc. a little more withdrawn stands Hotel del Prado that works as tea room and events hall. A good place to walk around however, if you go driving, we recommend to wander all over to see everything since this park is a big area for walking an only day. A good place.
An emblematic place in Montevideo is Rodó Park (Rambla and Jackson street), a short walk from the Mercosur building, 80 acres with a wide diverse approach: lakes with islands where you can rent pedal boats, bridges, roads, embankments of grass, a castle where works a library and street theater for children are performed time to time, a museum in the place, for children (200 meters to the east) there is another amusement park for children with a similar (but slightly smaller), dozens of monuments and monoliths, fountains, artificial waterfalls, beer, pizza, bowling night, a golf club... Finally, it is worth to see it for yourself. You can visit this park on day and night, especially on weekends when amusement park is working. Every Sunday morning (until 15:00) there is one of the main fairs in Montevideo selling mostly clothing and some crafts. By the way... This park is beside the beach and its sidewalk relatively well-lit and safe for you to walk serenely at day or night.
For children who love animals, there are two distinct zoo in Montevideo: the Villa Dolores (Rivera 3245), established in a small campus, with approximately 500 total specimens of mammals, birds and snakes. This small zoo cages has been recently remodeled and has a small playground with iron games. Price paid for admission is negligible. Closes at 18:00. Within the campus, there is a planetarium with municipal activities and conferences time to time the year mainly for children. Much further (Luis Batlle Berres km. 19200) is Lecocq Zoo. This park, much bigger than Villa Dolores, has the lowest level of containment for animals and cout with several outstanding attractions. A huge cage of monkeys, a small park where you'll find guided tours, scenic free walking camelids through the park, close to receiving feed trough cars windows (camelids are sometimes seen, sometimes not, we do not want to disappoint) . It must be said that those camelids are respectful and, although large, they are peaceful. There are a small hostel and a picnic area. A good place to spend the day, but unfortunately quite far from downtown Montevideo.
So far our recommended parks, but if you have time could be worthwile to visit Battle Park, where the Centennial Stadium, historical monument of soccer, the athletics track and several historic monuments. Also, Park of Sculptures (Luis A. de Herrera and Bvar. Gral Artigas). Mentioned sculptures of several different materials are in the side garden of Government House. Allows you to go with children who can play climbing them.
