Historic Montevideo

Montevideo - Best Cultural Tour (Guíde 2)

Montevideo is a city rich in architecture and many of its most emblematic areas has been specially prepared to welcome visitors and tourists. The main cultural area in Montevideo city is the historic center, known as "Ciudad Vieja" in Montevideo. You can start the tour at Independence Square, where there are housed the remains of Jose Gervasio Artigas, the local Hero. At the mausoleum is accessed by stairs on the equestrian monument of the hero. Looking eastward, we arrived at the palace Salvo, one of the most emblematic buildings in Montevideo and the protagonist of most of the postcards of the city. This 27-story building was designed by architect Mario Palanti and opened in 1925. For many years he was the tallest building in South America. Towards the western side of the square is the Gate of the Citadel, which separates the "center" of the old city. The city of Montevideo was built as a fortress defending the colonial Montevideo. Its construction was completed in 1780 after 40 years it has been started. The Gate of the Citadel is the only piece that is retained (restored) of that defense.

Over South-West corner you can see Solís Theatre (Buenos Aires and Juncal street), main theater hall of the Capital with your entire central canyon(lobby, stage and hall) and reopened in 2004 after a fire in the lobby. This theater has a unique system of actors guided tours that we are recommending here. The price of the tour is very cheap, and can be in Spanish, english and and some other languages. This theatre can can be visited on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 11, 12 and 16 hours. Of course, it is also advisable to see a show in Solís waring night lights some function of the National Comedy.

Walking through the "Ciudadela" ancient door we are received by Sarandí pedestrian street which go along with us until "Matriz" square and the Metropolitan Cathedral. Matriz square is a focal trade point in the city, today as well as in the colonial montevideo. On the west side stands the majestic Church of neoclassical style, opened in 1804. This cathedral is one of the four buildings which are still preserved from Colonial Montevideo. In our links section we leave a site with extensive information on the Cathedral.

The "Old City" in Montevideo is part of the historical itinerary, but olso cultural, commercial, restaurant and nighly Montevideo itineraries with complete and groomed tourist proposals that vary according with the time and days of the week. So while along the week the place can be visited for shopping, visiting art galleries of renowned artists and to see buildings of architectural value (such as Republic Bank headquarters in Cerrito street 351), on Saturday takes place "Cultural way" at old city that includes street performers, artisans and antique dealers along the Sarandí pedestrian street and Matriz square, where the Cathedral is. Every day at noon the Mercado del Puerto (port market) works with numerous restaurants which serve primarily the traditional Uruguayan beef (recognized worldwide for its quality) in a gourmet and arts proposal, among with tango performers, tipic drums or guitar players that run restaurants charging "will price". You cannot leave without lunch at Montevideo's port market, especially on weekend. You can also visit the Zabala square, work of French architect and landscape architect Edouard André. This square takes its name from the founder of the city: Bruno Mauricio de Zabala and beyond its Parisian garden look that its designer try to give, its oblique position contrasts with the gridded structure of the "old city".

If you are caught by Saturday night in the old city, you can walk along streets Bacacay or Bartolomé Mitre (parallels) with a plenty of modern restaurants for young people having fun. That's another hearty recommendation, especially for young souls. These restaurants and pubs are also open weekday at day or night. Here in the old city, if you like museums we recommend you Torres García (Sarandí 683, from 11:00 to 18:00 pm) Taranco Palace, headquarters of Decorative Arts Museum (address: 25 de Mayo 376), which is visited from Tuesday to Saturday from 12.15 to 18.00 hours, Sunday from 14 to 18 hours and specially from Tuesdays to Sundays at 16:30 hours there is a guided tour for all audiences. And If you still have time you can go to the Cabildo de Montevideo (Juan Carlos Gomez 1362, from 11:00 to 17:00 hs.).

Another important cultural chapter is Cerro de Montevideo (Montevideo's hill), where is the Forte and the Militar Museum General Artigas with ancient uniforms, weapons, cannons and other military items. To reach by car to the Forte take Carlos María Ramírez street and turn right on Viacaba There you will be a wide sightseen of Montevideo, the bay, the Port, Communications Tower and before the bay you can see "hill church". At the Forte you have telescopes to see closer those buildings.

We also recommend the Museum Juan Manuel Blanes (Avda Millan 4015) with artworks of the "Painter of the Fatherland", a leading Uruguayan artist. The paintings of this artist ranging from sketches few centimeters size to large murals have an astonishing realism, based on this artist devotion to the study of the intimate story of the "gaucho" (Uruguayan livestock worker) and all uruguayan customs. If you go to the Blanes Museum, dont forget to visit the Japanese Garden at the bottom of this museum (mentioned in "Green Places" guide) Finally and in order not to dwell too much on details, you can also run squares along 18 de Julio street watching bronze sculptures of artistic value.

         Have fun...
