This guide not intended to be a comprehensive and detailed guide to shopping in the city. Just try to sort the most important options for the tourist who wants to be summarized, a few shopping options in Montevideo whether typical items (leather, mates, etc..), Clothing or art. It is not easy but here it goes ...
If you reach the city by sea, near the port to the Old Town Plaza Independencia offers a range of possibilities: art galleries with works by national artists, and antiques houses specializing in jewelry, leather goods of high quality crafts in several local (reasonably priced) mostly wooden semi-precious stones in the north and in the vicinity of the pedestrian plaza Sarandí and Matrix offer a variety of items ranging from clothes to souvenirs to take to return.
If crossing the Plaza Independencia, Avenida tour July 18 and its vicinity (Center area) allows you to visit hundreds of businesses of all kinds of items. If you are interested in particular clothing and footwear, and Punta Carretas Pocitos concentrated enough shops with unique proposals especially generous pockets looking for brands and quality garments.
If you are interested in handicrafts, and you will find great variety in the traditional market (a local market in abundance in the street next to the San Jose City Council and one in the corner of the Plaza Cagancha) and the local Hands of Uruguay or the Done Here in the malls, the range is wide but to name a few items can be found in leather, wood, stone, wool, paper, glass, matte, so many materials in the national imagination of artisans scope. Quality and price are also varied: ranging from a small souvenir pocket accessible to any piece of art up for value.
In Montevideo, there are several shopping: If you come by bus get to Terminal Tres Cruces, which on the top floor has a square meal and several business premises, and in areas of Punta Carretas, Pocitos and Carrasco are shopping Punta Carretas (José Ellauri & Solano García), Montevideo Shopping (Luis A. de Herrera almost Rivera) and Portones Shopping (Av Bolivia and Av Italy), somewhat higher prices than normally available to the center (and comparable or higher quality) exhibit shopwindows tempting to anything you want to buy, food and places of entertainment (cinema, theater, games for kids, etc.).
If you are interested in antiques and crafts, walking is the typical Tristan Narvaja Fair, which gathers every Sunday to thousands of people who want to buy jewelry from old (small posts in the fair or houses nearby antiquities) to crafts (toys, decoration accessories, etc..) via fruit and vegetables, clothes, books or disks until pasta (for collectors). As for shows, there are also recognized in the Park Rodó (mostly clothes, books and crafts) and Biarritz VIlla bringing together all those who seek mainly clothing but also something more exclusive at low prices.
