Wildlife reserve

Piriápolis by Route 9

(Contributor: Alejandra Sellanes)

If you come to Route 9, at the height of 91 km, setting "Blue Hills", a great ride for adults and children: the breeding alligators, which have not only succeeded in captive breeding of alligators (for release later in areas favorable), but morrocoy turtles, another protected species. The scenery is spectacular, just the information very accessible and the entry. A venture very carefully, in their maintenance and attention to the visitor that there is no risk in recommending.

Very near here, in Las Flores station, taking the south by Route 71, Castle Pittamiglio is worth visiting. Later on Route 9, taking the left is the quiet town of Sugar Loaf, which welcomes its visitors with murals painted by renowned national artists, in every corner. If you went by car you can drive around and you'll find many of these murals, although some have succumbed to the sun and wear over time.

And now ... southward. The picturesque Route 37 runs between hills, impossible not to see the great cross on the summit of Sugar Loaf. On the slopes of the hill is the famous wildlife reserves. There is not only native animals as endangered, but a variety of animals from different habitats (wetlands, hills, mountains). The best thing is to look at either level is at the entrance. You can walk around or take a shorter route avoiding the lookout. Whatever way you'll be satisfied. It was closed for some time but today is open to the public, properly marked and maintained, with animals in captivity and semi captivity entertaining labyrinths in the shade of footage signposted in entries, places with wooden benches, roads and very comprehensive flora posters and fauna. After some time closed, the redevelopment of the reserve was crystallized in 2002. Only this is a worthwhile trip and you will want to return ... But there is still the greatest adventure: climbing to the summit of Sugar Loaf on a path drawn on rocks and logs. Never go too late (because if the delay increase, down from the hill takes more and more difficult), and most importantly bring a bottle of water, the safer they will need. If not taken, there is a bar at the entrance to the park where you can buy. And for those who still retain a bit of encouragement, on top of us the cross that can be raised by the long and narrow staircase. Will award an exceptional view of the blue sea, the city, green valleys and mountains, in short, a delight for the senses. At the entrance to the reserve for the kids, there is a unique park with children's games: they are well looked after, they are entertaining, very different, for all ages and, not least, there are seats that adults can take a break.

Following the path towards Piriápolis by 37, we find the famous Castle Pirie, founder of the spa. Which was his home now houses furniture and vintage items in excellent state of preservation, a curious collection of 777 heart-shaped stones. You can make guided tours and admission is free. Alongside the castle are still the ruins of what was once the Andalusian village, built some years ago for the television series "Curro Jiménez" (perhaps only the old agreement). Today presents a semi-neglected and dilapidated, with a deposit of tires and garbage and its appeal is limited to seeing people as a "false".

Almost reaching the city, is the Church of Pirie, built at the dawn of the last century and never opened. Reportedly it was completely finished but never came to celebrate a mass. Since coming to town, we get the Parque de la Cascada. It is an excellent place to eat a roast (there is a large area with many neat and meticulous barbecues roofed, stone flowers, tables and seats) or just enjoy the shade of many old trees. There is a very small set of animals and games for children, with little maintenance. The waterfall that gives the name and the current that causes it is not in very good conditions of cleanliness. Still, it's worth the visit.

And finally, the bright Piriápolis open sea. But the city deserves comment. For now it is best to find a good accommodation where the next guide.
