For those born in Uruguay, summering in Rocha's almost a tradition, but when we started planning this guide, we became a bit difficult to describe a department whose basic attractions for tourists are not in the infrastructure or in regional events, or historical-cultural legacy, nor any other aspect where the human footprint is the protagonist. Even when there are, and many of them, would not be fair to mention these aspects to describe this particular department.
Those who visit Rocha, do it to enjoy the lush bounty that nature has had with its costs, to walk along the emerald blue transparency of its waters, endless dunes as endless as huge, perhaps the largest in South America, soothe the soul in its lagoons and marshlands, observe their natural generous collection of animal species, birds, sea turtles, whales, visit large areas of native forest, share fishing with fishermen in villages and towns that seem to have been transported to another century, roam from a beach town to another in the department, through a landscape of palm groves, that is unique in the world, visit one of largest woodlands of ombúes in the world...
Surely when the tourism ministry officials believed that the best definition of the type of tourism that takes place in this country is "Uruguay Natural", went through their minds the department of Rocha, so natural and unspoiled unlike any other in the country and probably few in the world.
Below we give you a brief snapshot of the best Rocha for you to choose the one that best suits your vacation plan, you can further delve into the specific travel guides of each place where we link here:
La Paloma
|
Route 15 km. 0. La Paloma is one of the main beaches of Rocha and of course of the country. Good hotels, many services, several dining options, dancing places. A beach resort for tourists who do not want too many troubles and want to have everything at hand. The beaches of La Paloma are as extensive as varied and although we are talking about different places, you could say that La Paloma goes from Anaconda to Antoniópolis. For sea bathing you have a plenty of beaches. From Los Botes beach to the west, goo waves for sea bathing and also for surfing, white sand so fine that even whistle while walking. Proceeding to the left you have El Cabito, almost a natural swimming pool since it is enclosed by sandbars and rocks, so it is suitable for young children when good weather.
To fishing you have the port, the lighthouse rocks or if you dare, with a good reel you can have good fishing for White Croakers also to the right of the beach Los Botes, toward Anaconda. The Balconada beach for fishing and sea bathing, the Bay of La Paloma is a good beach for swimming and to the left of the Port, are Costa Azul and La Aguada for sea bathing, but also with good waves for surfing.
You have to visit the lighthouse, the craft fair in the summer and a town quite flirtatious, with charming and simple coastal architecture as everything else in Rocha. A gastronomy focused on seafoode and shellfish and many services such as cinema, supermarkets, shops, etc. As for natural environments it can also venture out to the Rocha's lagoon. La Paloma is a sample of everything offered in Rocha in one single beach resort. If you want to experience everything without moving, we recommend La Paloma. Read more in La Paloma
La Pedrera
|
Route 10 km 228 - 15 minutes far from La Paloma, La Pedrera has been transformed in recent years in a fashinable Rocha beach resort, chosen from youngest, although it was founded more 100 years ago.It has spectacular cliffs facing the ocean and serene beaches that can be enjoyed by the whole family to the left of the rocks and others, such as Playa Del Barco, deeper and with good waves ideal for surfing and a meeting point for the youth of the town. But La Pedrera is not only beaches, it has a busy nightlife with restaurants, pubs and discos, aimed mainly to twentysomething young people, although other age will not be bored neither. From 2004, in early January is made Vox Pop, a rock festival that attracts thousands of young people from this resort and nearby ones.
To visit, the star is the ruins of a wreckage of modern times, the Cathay in Playa del Barco. Cathay is a Chinese tuna boat that sank off at the coast of La Pedrera on 14 September 1977. Surely many of the usual tourists in Pedrera attended the long chronicle of misfortune suffered by this fishing boat and attempts of prefecture to reverse his fate.. Read more about La Pedrera
