Generally Uruguayan tourism destinations include the beach, either river or sea, as the main attraction. This is not the case of Villa Serrana, a small town where you can breathe the clean air of the countryside.

Villa Serrana was founded in 1945 as an European-style residences place, either for permanent living or for weekends. The architect who mapped out all the details, thought to maintain contact with native flora and still have a viable town in all its aspects.

It is located between the valleys of the streams Marmarajá and Penitente in the hill ranges of Minas, Department of Lavalleja. It has an artificial lake that gives it that touch of Europe with which it was designed and is in a natural environment plenty of very special flora and fauna.

If you plan to go for the weekend, it is best to arrive early in the morning to find accommodation. Once you have left your belongings, if you are traveling by car, leave it at your hotel and enjoy the walking tour. A good idea is to start with a visit to the lake and the dam. It is also recommended to walk along its banks and streams, looking for a small but beautiful waterfall, the "Bath of India". Lunch can be enjoyed in The Calaguala or The Fortress, two small homemade food restaurants located along the walk, after crossing the stream. After lunch we start the return journey the same way. In the afternoon you can ride a horse to travel the countryside and take a look at the elegant homes and cottages, that are characterized for being made of fine materials very alike: wood, stone, thatched.

On the second day is recommended to walk through the streets of the village and visit the two monuments with identify the place: the Ventorrillo of Buena Vista and the Meson Las Cañas.

Arriving

With your own vehicle, from Florida take Route 8 to Minas, the capital of the Department of Lavalleja. At kilometer 139 there is an entry, then later there is another. Then drive about 3 km along a dirt road and arrive to the village. If you do not have a vehicle, then from the Bus Terminal Tres Cruces (in Montevideo) will board a bus bound for Minas (estimated price $ 130) and then from there another to Villa Serrana. IMPORTANT: This bus goes only on Tuesdays and Thursdays, it is imperative to be well informed of schedules (SDC Company 044-22256).

Where to stay

The accommodation offer in Villa Serrana is varied. There are hotels, a hostel, cabins for rent and camping. Prices to suit all budgets.

Facts

  • There are no supermarkets or department stores, only stores where people get the basic supplies, so it is important to bring those things you may not find there, as rechargeable batteries, specific medications or any special power adapter.
