Uruguayan Lighthouses
Our Lighthouses. Tales and legends of these ancient luminous buildings, have always impassioned, not only to sailors, but also to many of those who have never had the sea as a casual home. Since long, we are receiving diverse proposals about lighthouses in our edition's desktop, from our friends and coontributors. However, the fact is, has been quite difficult to plan a good page about this topic, since information about Uruguayan lighthouses is abundant in many places and books. And, being our experience quite small, it is difficult to provide a lighthouses page with the quality and originality that our readers use to get in other sections of Tourists Club. |
At this time, and after 2010's tourist season, while other sites keep building ships to sail along the network, we are going to stop here to build a lighthouse. A page that will hopefully grow with the support of all lovers of these old towers. For now, we will only publish a brief information of each one, but, it is our intention, to have the 360 degree view of all the lighthouses of the Uruguayan coast that we can climb, for give our eyes to those who have not the possibility of do it. And about the rest, as always, our best pictures. We encourage you to participate in this exciting reprint with pictures and information. Greetings to all |

At daybreak the year 1872, started the wirk on the tower. It was hoped to build the tower before the mechanisms, crystals and all the technology that would give life to the beacon, arrival. On May 31 of that year the tower was abot 100 feet high. That night, while fifteen workers slept in boxes under the tower, with fury was unleashed a storm, stronger than the foot of the tower. As if it wanted to stop the salvation that tower would offer to the distant light vessels venturing near Santa Maria Cape, the storm collapsed the same night that unfinished building . That tragedy would take with them the lives of many of the workers who had no time to escape from the collapse. However, nothing can to bow down the human tenacity. That is why, on September 1, 1874 a new tower was finally raised, bright and calm as the spa blooming at her feet, born just that day.
